“We know that gender defines and
shapes our lives. The question addressed by Gender and Social
Theory is exactly how this process occurs and what the social
consequences, and the consequences for social theory, might be.
The emergence of feminist theory has enriched our understanding
of the impact of gender on our individual lives and the
contemporary social sciences all recognize gender
differentiation in the social world.
The issue, however, which this book discusses is the more
complex question of the extent to which social theory is
significantly disrupted, disturbed or devalued by the fuller
recognition of gender difference. We know that gender matters,
but Mary Evans examines whether social theory is as blind to
gender as is sometimes argued and considers the extent to which
a greater awareness of gender truly shifts the concerns and
conclusions of social theory. Written by an author with an
international reputation, this is an invaluable text for
students and an essential reference in the field.” [from the back cover]

Sita is one of the defining figures
of Indian womanhood, yet there is no single version of her
story. Different accounts coexist in myth, literature and
folktale. Canonical texts deify Sita while regional variations
humanize her. Folk songs and ballads connect her timeless
predicament to the daily lives of rural women. Modern-day women
continue to see themselves reflected in films, serials and soap
operas based on Sita’s narrative.
Sacrifice, self denial and unquestioning loyalty are some of the
ideals associated with popular perceptions of Sita. But the
Janaki who symbolized strength, who could lift Shiva’s mighty
bow, who courageously chose to accompany Rama into exile and who
refused to follow him back after a second trial, is often
forgotten.
However she is remembered, revered or written about, Sita
continues to exert a powerful influence on the collective Indian
psyche. In Search of Sita presents essays, conversations and
commentaries that explore different aspects of her life. It
revisits mythology, reopening the debate on her birth, her days
in exile, her abduction, the test by fire, the birth of her sons
and, finally, her return to the earth—offering fresh
interpretations of this enigmatic figure and her indelible
impact on our everyday lives.[from the back cover]

It is now widely recognized that
gender analysis has both challenged and enriched many of the
standard assumptions and concepts that inform economic analysis
of different kinds, whether to do with paid or unpaid work,
peasant studies, care labour and many other areas. Despite this,
changes in economic policies have been few and far between, and
most do not translate into women-friendly economic policies. Nor
have the important contributions of women's studies research to
the field of economics-standardly seen as a male discipline-been
given its due importance or recognition.
This collection of essays by some of the best-known academics
and practitioners in the fields of economics, women's studies,
development and sociology, examines a wide range of areas in
which women's studies has played a crucial contributions. They
look at the market, the money economy, at development policies,
at water rights and at macroeconomic methodologies, in order to
address the question of how a gender analysis of macroeconomic
policies needs to be given wider acceptance and to be integrated
into policy and planning. Accessibly written and rigorously
researched, this book will be useful for academic and general
readers, and for those in the related fields of economics,
development and gender studies." [from the back cover]

The 73rd
Constitutional Amendment Act provides constitutional recognition
to Panchayati Raj as a tier of federation. As a result, the
Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) today have more potential and
power than before and in some parts of India, they have become
viable political power in their own right. What makes them
effective and how they vary from one region to another are
issues of importance in the context of Indian democratic system
and social change. The present book deals with the study and
findings of such issues in India with special reference to
Sikkim.
India is a large country with diverse socio-economic conditions
prevailing in different states. There are also considerable
variations in the rural power structure in different states. As
such, the factors influencing the demand for active political
participation of women in Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs)
also vary widely from one state to another. Therefore, it
demands frequent exploration of women leadership in the
Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs). Exhaustive attempts have
been made to explore the role of women in this book. It is hoped
that this comprehensive volume will be of immense importance to
researchers, planners and policy makers.

Gender
equality and women empowerment are on the priority of almost all
the democratic societies in their effort to establish a society
based on justice and human rights. The direction and pace of all
human progress in the next few decades will be determined by the
empowerment and enablement of women. So, they need to be
integrated into the mainstream of the nation. The active
involvement of women in the social and political decision-making
is the need of the time to secure a better future of the human
race. 74th Constitutional Amendment Act in the Constitution of
India giving thirty three percent reservation to women in Urban
Local Bodies is a step towards this direction. This amendment
has not only given representation to women as members of Urban
Local Bodies but also provided them the opportunity to lead
these institutions as chairpersons. The participation of women
as members of various Local Government Institutions enables them
to take part in decision-making process but there can be every
possibility that they may be participating only as followers. It
is only when they get a chance to head some institutions that
their capabilities to lead and perform are put to a real test.
The present study tries to probe into this aspect of policy of
reservation which has enabled some of the women to act as
chairpersons. The work tries to analyze the issue of women
leadership in all the Municipal Councils headed by woman
Presidents during the period from 2003 to 2008 in Punjab and
working patterns of women leaders in these Municipal Councils.
To understand leadership patterns, the variables like
socio-economic and political background of women leaders, their
role, working styles, performance, perceptions about various
issues, handicaps, motivating factors, attitude of society
towards them and development projects undertaken in the
Municipal Councils under their leadership need to be studied.
The present study is an attempt to identify these variables.
