The online photo exhibition website is based on an exhibition curated in 2001 by Malavika Karlekar with Leela Kasturi and Indrani Majumdar. This display was initially supported by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), India International Centre and The Japan Foundation, New Delhi.
The current rendering based on the original display with some valuable additions, was made possible by the generous funding from the Centre for Documentation and Area-Transcultural Studies, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Tokyo.
A companion volume to the exhibition – Visualizing Indian Women 1875-1947: A documentary – edited by Malavika Karlekar is to be published by Oxford University Press, New Delhi in October 2005. It consists of an introductory essay by Mala Khullar, Leela Kasturi and Malavika Karlekar as well as a folio of all the exhibited photographs and detailed captions.
Copyright for photographs is with individual and institutional contributors while CWDS holds the copyright for the website.
The program is a self-paced, interactive, web-enabled training application that supports the program developed by Centre for Women’s Development Studies.
