Costumes of an Age
Centre for Women’s Development Studies’ 2017 calendar features photographs of models from officially-sanctioned costume shows/pageants that were staged several times in the 1950s and 1960s for visiting dignitaries like Chou en-Lai and Queen Elizabeth II and others. It was part of newly independent India’s showcasing of the country – and in this case, women’s costumes through the ages, for an elite foreign audience, curious to know more.
