Project: Intersections of Ageing and Disability: An Exploratory Study in Delhi
Call for Research Associate (On Contract)
Number of Positions: 1
Duration: 119 Days (1st November 2024 to 28th February 2025)
About the Project:
With increase in global life expectancy and decline in fertility rates, there is accelerated demographic ageing, including in India. Healthy and successful ageing are core development goals, which involve the process of developing and preserving the functional ability necessary for well-being in older age, while increasing the lifespan with optimum functioning. In the light of this demographic trend, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2021–2030 the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing, which is a global collaboration bringing together governments, civil society, international agencies, professionals, academia, the media and the private sector
People who experience disabilities earlier in life are said to ‘age with disability’, while those with mid or late life disability onsets are said to have ‘disability with ageing’. Individuals experiencing disability with ageing must integrate their previous able-bodied adulthood with new impairments: while individuals ageing with a disability have to often navigate additional health concerns as they negotiate their changing disability profile with the so-called normal geriatric changes. Thus, it can be said that disability and ageing are processes that are interconnected and overlapping with each other across the lifespan Research on ageing and disability is crucial due to the growing number of elderly individuals worldwide and their increasing life expectancy.
The present study is an exploratory qualitative study to map out the complexity of the ageing-disability interface through interviews with a cohort of ageing persons with and without pre-existing disabilities in Delhi mainly through a gender lens. A cohort of elderly persons (above 60 years) disaggregated along gender, disability status and living arrangement (domiciliary or institutional) will be interviewed on a range of themes like life cycle transition, health status, livelihood, relationship with family daily routines etc. It is hoped this small study will open up the domain of ageing and disability to a wider research investigation.
