Project Title “Nationalism and Women’s Question: A Study of Hindi Magazine Chand”

Field Investigator: 1 Post (Contractual Post)

Duration: 2 Months

About the Study

This research explores the role of Chand, a women’s magazine founded by Ram Rakh Singh Sahgal in 1922, in shaping the discourse on women and nationalism during colonial India. The magazine, published until 1947-48, provided a platform for discussions on women’s issues like child marriage, widow remarriage, and property rights, while also addressing their involvement in the national movement. The study aims to analyze the content related to women and nationalism in Chand, focusing on Sahgal’s editorial strategies and his views on women’s liberation and their role in the national struggle. The research will examine how Chand influenced and reflected the intersection of women’s issues with the larger nationalist agenda.
