Project: The Role of Women in Riparian Vegetation based Livelihood in the border of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh

 

Call for Field Investigator: 1 post (On Contract)

Duration: 60 Days (January & February ‘2025)

Abstract: The research focuses on artisanal activities involving tall grasses, particularly Pater (Elephant grass), along the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border of the Yamuna River. It highlights the significant role of women in these activities, which include the collection and initial processing of grass for various biodegradable products. The study addresses the socio-economic status of families engaged in these livelihoods and examines the types of flora present in this floodplain area. The objective of the project is human activities, particularly agricultural conversion of floodplain areas, impact the availability of aquatic and semi-aquatic vegetation. While much of the floodplain is used for vegetable cultivation, the riparian zones are crucial for gathering grass, making the collection labour-intensive for women. The research suggests that despite challenges, these grass-based products are environment friendly and support sustainable livelihoods for local communities. The study aims to shed light on the socio-economic dynamics of these women and the ecological importance of the vegetation along the Yamuna river.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  1. Field visit and check the natural riparian vegetation
  2. Community interaction reading the use of this natural resources
  3. Pilot study based on pre-structured questionnaire
  4. Field visit and the reporting of the key persons’ interview
  5. Socio-Economic data collection from the finalised questionnaire
  6. Data entry in excel sheet and processing
  7. Reporting of GD and FGD

The field researchers are expected to stay close to the respective field site during the survey. The applicant must commit to work full time for the mentioned duration.

Preferred Candidates

Master’s degree in relevant field (Preferred but not limited to Social Sciences), with some prior experience of conducting field work. Experience in collecting both quantitative & qualitative data is highly desirable. The educational qualification cannot be a constraint for experienced candidates. Candidates from historically marginalized communities and women are encouraged to apply

Good communication skills in spoken Hindi and written English is mandatory

Remuneration – Salary is 20,000/- per month
