Project: Disability, Disease And Healthy Ageing In Rural India
Call for Research Associate (On Contract)
Number of Positions: 1
Duration: 4 months
About the Project:
With increase in global life expectancy and decline in fertility rates, there is accelerated demographic ageing, including in India. Healthy and successful ageing are core development goals, which involve the process of developing and preserving the functional ability necessary for well-being in older age, while increasing the lifespan with optimum functioning. In the light of this demographic trend, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2021–2030 the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing, which is a global collaboration bringing together governments, civil society, international agencies, professionals, academia, the media and the private sector
Studies on ageing in India have mostly focused on urban populations. But the majority of the Indian population resides in semi-urban and rural areas, where the experiences of ageing may be quite different. The present study is an exploratory qualitative study to map out the complexity of the ageing process through interviews with a cohort of ageing persons in rural areas bordering Delhi mainly through a gender lens. A cohort of elderly persons (above 60 years) disaggregated along gender, disability status and living arrangement (domiciliary or institutional) will be interviewed on a range of themes like life cycle transition, health status, livelihood, relationship with family daily routines etc. It is hoped this small study will open up the domain of ageing in non-urban contexts to a wider research investigation.
