Project: “Self-reported Health and Well-being: A case of migrant students from North-east in Delhi”

About the Study

The existing empirical studies on the ethnic migrants from the North-east region in metro-cities of the country noted a high level of distress, frustration and discrimination. These could have a huge impact on the lives of these population in both positive and negative ways. Studies around the globe reflected that in process of migration and those hardships, stressors and strains in new destination place have found increased migrants’ morbidity in several ways.

North-east students, life in the native state, is affected by socio-political and poor governance issues and weak educational infrastructures, conflicts, and socio-economic conditions. And post-migration, they are facing additional problematic dimensions owing to racial and cultural differences in their own country. Thus, significant studies on the aspect of health and emotional/psychological well-being or health-related quality of life of ethnic migrants from North-east region living in metro-cities need to reflect to include in the debate of migrant health issues or urban health issues.

The present study is an exploratory study to map out aspect of self-reported health and psychological well-being of the students migrated to Delhi from the socio-politically disrupting state, Manipur, North-east India. Field study including in-depth interviews and FGD will be conducted among the students who are studying in Delhi (Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Jamia Millia Islamia University) for the last one to three years (target will be on recent migrants).

Requirements

  • Post Graduate in Anthropology/ Sociology/ Psychology and related disciplines, having experience in the fields of Public health-related studies
  • Experience in conducting research projects with data collection and analytical skills of social sciences research.
  • Good command of Hindi and English

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Review of secondary literature and field-based data collection including in-depth interviews.
  • Translation and transcription of interviews.
  • Data processing and analysis, contribute to the writing of the report in consultation with the Principal Investigators.
  • Any other work assigned by the Principal Investigators related to the research project mentioned above.

The applicant must commit to work full-time for the mentioned duration.

Remuneration – Salary is Rs.20000/- per month Consolidated; fieldwork travelling will be covered.
